This is the sixth book I read for the Pay It Sideways Challenge. I doubt I would ever have picked The Sugar Queen up if it weren’t for this review at Trees and Ink, which makes the story sound intriguing, magical and ‘sweet’.
Unfortunately, I don’t have many good things to say. I should have listened to my gut instinct because this is really not my sort of book. I was hoping for a subtle magic in the storyline, but instead just got silly magic – a lucky cardigan that mostly works to attract a man that the main character has fallen in love with. It’s the sort of magic that you would read about in a romance novel for teenagers, and indeed everything about the storyline felt childish and naive.
Josey lives at home with her high-maintenance mother, who expects Josey to be at her every beck and call. She is in her late twenties, but reminds me more of a teenager, hiding sweets in her wardrobe and harbouring a secret crush on the postman. One day, Josey wakes up to find a strange visitor in her wardrobe, a visitor that she will eventually befriend.
What follows is a tedious succession of awkward romantic situations and ridiculous encounters. This novel is slow and predictable. The ‘twist’ at the end is obvious from the very first chapter and really not very original. I’m not keen on romance novels as it is, but this one really had nothing to offer.

I am sorry that this was a bit of a disappointment for you. I had this book out from the library last month but I never got to it. Not sure I regret that now.

Maybe it just wasn’t my sort of thing… but there are definitely much better books to spend your time on!

Yeah, I suppose it is! Another person had a power that made books follow her or appear near her when she was in need. That doesn’t sound too bad really! (Still a bit silly though…)

I tried to make it short. It’s sad when I read a book that I really don’t like. At least I’ve tried and tested it for others though!
