Adventures Ahead – Book Recommendations Needed!

I’ve booked flights and topped up my vaccinations, so I guess it’s official – I’m escaping my London life for a couple of months at the beginning of 2016. Although I don’t have any concrete plans, I’ll be arriving in Bali and hope to explore the rest of Indonesia. Then I’ll probably hop over to Vietnam for a week or two – but who knows where my feet will take me!

Thanks to Tereza at Miss Travel Fairy for letting me use this photo taken at one of the Gili Islands in Indonesia. Check out her Instagram for amazing pictures and travel inspiration!

I still have a couple of months until I leave, but I’ve already started a vague packing list in my mind. And what’s more important than deciding on an appropriate book or two?

So readers, this is where you come in! Please comment below with recommendations for books to get me in the mood for my trip. Any books set in Indonesia or Vietnam, or books that might teach me a bit about the culture and history before I go. Also, feel free to recommend places to visit too!

Thoughts from a Festival – ArchWay with Words 2015

North London treated me well last weekend; sunny weather, great food, good company and the annual ArchWay with Words festival! I missed it last time, so was delighted to see it make an appearance again for its third year. Started by local Stephanie Smith, who also set up the weekly Archway market, it’s a wonderful celebration of creative talent with a cracking line-up.

Here are the two events that I couldn’t choose between, and so booked both. Well, at only £5 per ticket, why not?

Top Ten Tuesday – Characters I Wish Had Their Own Book

This Tuesday The Broke and the Bookish would like to talk about characters that they wish had their own book. There is often a side character with an interesting back story that I would like to learn more about. Here are just a few of them…

Top Ten Tuesday – Books I Want to Reread

This Tuesday The Broke and the Bookish are discussing books they would like to reread. There are certain books, such as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, that I like to read over and over again because I enjoy the familiarity of the storyline, setting and characters. It’s also interesting to experience books at a different age and stage in your life. My younger self had very different feelings towards Pride and Prejudice compared to myself as a twenty-something.

Here are some books that I have only read once and would like to pick up again sometime…

Top Ten Tuesday – Halloween

This week’s theme for Top Ten Tuesday brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish is all about Halloween. I’m not really a huge fan of scary books, so I’ll be splitting this week’s Top Ten into two Top Fives.

Today’s theme is: Books to Read to get into the Halloween Spirit and Characters I Would Want to be for Halloween.

Top Ten Tuesday – Places Books Have Made Me Want to Visit

I’ve been a fan of the weekly Top Ten Tuesday feature over at The Broke and the Bookish ever since I started Bundle of Books and have been considering joining in for a while. I’ve been a bit too busy to blog a lot recently, so something like this will be a fun way to get back into the swing of things!

Today’s theme is: Places Books Have Made Me Want to Visit.

5 Reasons Women Should Love Game of Thrones

** WARNING: Contains spoilers **

Recently there has been controversy over the Game of Thrones TV series. It’s been written about in the Guardian, and even Woman’s Hour has picked up on it. This all stems from one particular episode that included a rape scene between Jaime and Cersei Lannister, which was definitely consensual in the book – if anything Cersei was pushing for sex, while Jaime held back. I was not happy with this change because it isn’t consistent with Jaime’s character, which is becoming far more sympathetic.

Who Needs Furniture When There’s Books?!

I might soon be moving to London! Well, my boyfriend is moving to London for work and I plan to join him as soon as I’ve found a job that I’ll be happy with. (So please feel free to link any interesting jobs in the comments section below!)

It’s all very exciting, but I have a problem – a book problem. Moving to London means moving to a much smaller place. I don’t have that many books, but I can’t bear the idea of getting rid of any of them. So I’ve been desperately searching the Internet for some inventive ways to store books, and got a bit distracted…
