Literary Cooking

A few months ago, I discovered The Little Library Café, a blog that combines two of my favourite things: books and food. The recipes are designed by bookworm Kate and inspired by food from literature. Her reading tastes are similar to mine and many of our childhood favourites overlap.

Kate’s blog is beautifully clean and has a simple layout. It’s user-friendly and organised into a book index, recipe index and gallery menu. The food looks mouthwatering and the instructions are easy to follow. But the best thing is that everything comes from the heart. Each post begins with a quote and introduction detailing Kate’s personal link to the book and recipe. I was eager to give some of them a try. Here are the results…

Mushroom, Bacon and Leek Pie from The Fellowship of the Ring

I have always considered myself to be hobbit-like in my attitude towards food. I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of second breakfast, for instance! I was eager to try this hearty recipe as it’s inspired by a meal set in the friendly home of Farmer Maggot. Even the pastry worked out, and I don’t have the best track record with pastry. Click here for the recipe.

Blueberry and Chocolate Pancakes from The Goldfinch

Traditional English pancakes are one of my favourite treats. They are easy, fun and delicious as either a savoury or sweet dish. I find American pancakes more challenging, but this recipe, inspired by Theo’s imaginary breakfast in The Goldfinch, worked better than I could have hoped. I particularly like the juicy blueberries! Chocolatl from Northern Lights

Chocolatl is just the thing for a cold winter’s night, and we’ve been having a few recently! Kate delivers another clear and concise recipe which gives a lovely spicy result. I would consider using less chocolate next time, but that’s just me. Now I wish I had my copy of Northern Lights nearby for a re-read! Click here for the recipe.

Kate’s first cookbook will be published later this year, but you can keep up with her on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and of course, her blog, where she regularly posts new recipes.

  1. Ahhh this is so cool!! I’ve never heard of that literary cooking blog, so I’ll definitely have to check it out. Those blueberry and chocolate pancakes sound delicious! ❤

    • They were! I can’t wait to try more recipes from her blog. Unfortunately quite a few of the recipes contain nuts and I (like you!) am allergic. So I’ll have to be a bit more creative and make changes to some of them.
